Prayer with groaning

By Nick Bibile

Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Groaning in prayer comes when the Christian is confessing prayer due to his/her sin, suffering or in persecution

Psalm 32:3-5 Here David is groaning in prayer for his sins.

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away

through my groaning all day long.

For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;

my strength was dried up by the heat of summer.

I acknowledged my sin to you,

and I did not cover my iniquity;

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”

and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Psalm 13:2 Here is a prayer when your enemy is persecuting you.

How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?

Sometimes we groan, moan in tears not knowing the perfect words to pray, unable to pray but the Spirit of God groans with us in prayer.

Psalm 31:10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away.

John 14:15-17 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit is called παράκλητος (parakletos) which means "called to one's side" or "summoned to one's aid" which infers a legal advocate or intercessor. The Holy Spirit in us helps and speaks on our behalf.
