Is the Law of God applicable to us today?

By Nick Bibile

There are many churches that say the Old Testament laws do not apply to us today as we are living in the times of grace.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ

Read the above very carefully, it does not say,  For the law was given through Moses; BUT grace and truth came through Jesus Christ

The ceremonial law (The external law, rituals) were only a shadow and was fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:16-17 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

The word substance comes from sub means under. (Submarine) The underneath of the ceremonial law is Christ, pointing to him who is the perfection.

Sabbaths here is not talking on the Sabbath Day,  but a Sabbath as there are many Sabbaths in the O.T. I will cover the Sabbath day another time.

The 10 Commandments is the moral law of God, written by the very finger of God and it will never be deleted. The 10 commandments is applicable to the church today but the ceremonial laws are abolished.

The moral law of God or the 10 Commandments show us we are sinners. If not for the 10 commandments we don’t know that we are sinners.

Sin is breaking the law of God.

1 John 3:4  Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

Romans 7:7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”

Jesus used the 10 Commandments in the Beatitudes, exposing the truth of the 10 commandments.

Matthew 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother  will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Matthew 5:27-28  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Beloved, God did not abolish the 10 Commandments or the moral law of God, rather moral law rips our righteousness, shows us that we are guilty by breaking every commandment,  then showing us the only way through  Grace - sinner is driven to Christ.

Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
