God had mercy on Hagar

By Nick Bibile

Genesis 16

Hagar is an Egyptian woman, a maid servant of Sarai. Probably given by the King of Egypt to Abram at that unhappy time when Abram’s faith failed him, and he went down into Egypt, and requested Sarai not to tell that she was his wife. Whenever sin  committed by the child of God, is sure to have results of sorrow. Hagar became the special maid of Sarai. God had promised to Abram that he should have a son, and that he should be the father of nations. Now Abram is about 85 years old yet has no son. They are both getting old and Abram and Sarai patience is running out, for Abram it seems that God had forgotten the promise.  Now Sarai was tempted to make the typical custom of the ancient near eastern nations. In their custom if they had a barren wife, the barren wife can authorize the husband to obtain children by her personal slave. In this case with Hagar.

Abram the father of faith got into the flesh by obeying the bad advice of his wife Sarai. This shows that even the best of the saints fell into sin due to the Adamic fallen nature.  Apostle Paul is correct when he said

Ro 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Righteousness comes only from the Lord Christ Jesus. In him we are perfect, without him we are lost.

Abram had a child with Hagar and the name of the child is Ishmael.   Now there was a strife between Sarai and Hagar. Hagar couldn’t take it anymore.

Hagar fled from their presence and she was on the road to Egypt, where she originally came from. But what could a lone woman do in her condition, all alone in the wilderness? Really tired with her journey, she sees a fountain, and she sits there.

Now an angel suddenly appeared to her and said, “The Lord hath heard thy affliction.

verse seven, “The angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water.” Significant place! Can you remember when our Lord Jesus found another woman at the well. “Jesus, being tired, sat thus on the well. A woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.” In both cases the woman was at the fountain of water. My beloved, go to the fountain filled with Emanuel’s blood and you will find forgiveness.

She called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, you are the God who sees, this is the all seeing God came to her in angelic form, our mediator Jesus had mercy on a poor slave woman who had run away from her mistress.  God did not visit Sarai but the slave woman. Here at the well God comforted her and advised her to return back to her mistress.

We too when we are deep down in our troubles and sorrows, when there is no where to go, we need to go to the fountain of living water, God will give us a refreshment to a tired sorrowful soul, he will comfort you and guide your soul just like how did for Hagar

Jesus always lived for others not for himself. A widow has just lost her only son; he weeps at the coffin, and with a word, restores life to the dead man.

He sees a paralytic, a leper, or a man long confined to his
bed; he speaks, they rise, and are healed.

Beloved friends you should be loving also.
Let your love shine out on all men!

There are many sorrowful hurting people like Hagar in our towns and cities, may be in your church, your school, they are looking for help, they have
nowhere to go, we are called Christians meaning Christ like, go to them and speak kind words, do kind actions. We Christians have the power of God to change neighborhoods, towns, cities and societies. If all Christians live the life of the Bible the whole nation would be blessed. Don’t get into your own clicks as some are like isolated icebergs, no one cares to go near them, they float on the sea of forgetfulness,
Live out Christ again in the "kindness of your life".
