Do not be selfish, in humility count others important

Only a true genuine Christian can do the above.

By Nick Bibile

Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others

(Please also read the example of our Lord from verse 5-8)

Christians are called the lights of the world. (Matthew 5:14) meaning we are different from the unbelievers, we have a unique Christlike personality. We shine as lights in this dark world.

One of the most important things of that bright shining light is humility. Without humility we cannot count others important. Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39)

Jesus set the early example of humility in washing the feet of the disciples. Washing was done by a slave. Holy angels worship Jesus in heaven and he left his golden throne of heaven and became a servant showing his down to earth humility.

Humility is the key to put others first, others ahead of you. Remember Abraham, when there was conflict between Abraham servants and Lot’s servants,  Abraham said it’s best to part ways, and he gave Lot the first choice.

Genesis 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.

There are many even so-called Christians are selfish, don’t care for others. They would care for their friends but not for anyone else. They want to be first, want to be noticed. This is not Christianity.

1 John 1:9  I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority.

Remember the story of the good Samaritan, how he sacrificed his time for the fellow neighbor.

Corinthians 10:24  Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor

Why do we prefer others, why do we count others as important?

The goal is that they would be drawn by our smaller light to the greater light Christ. That they would see we are different and without much preaching they would see the Bible printed in our behavior and come to know the Lord.

1 Peter 2:12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
