Turning water into wine

v. 1) One week after, Cana small village in Galilee, about 7-9 miles from Nazareth, Nathaniel from Cana 21:2, Jesus mother there.

V2) Jesus and his disciples invited. 5 Disciples, John, Peter, Andrew, Philip and Nathaniel.  Joseph, maybe dead.

V3) the wedding lasts for about a week, wine ran out, embarrassing moment for the bridegroom.  Why did Mary go to Jesus? Oldest of the family, widow trusted in the son of God.  Mariolatry. 

V4) Note woman not mother.  Jesus is about 30 years old, note his question to Mary.  See Luke 2:41-52, submission ended. Mary’s authority over his Son ended and this day his Father’s business started.  c/f Mat 12:46.  Hour of Jesus especially his death 7:30; 8:20; 12:23

V5) Do whatever he tells you, not anymore of Mother’s authority.  Now all must submit to the God the Son.  c/f 20:30

V6) total 180 gallons

V7) did not tell his disciples.

V 8-9)  language active imperative.  Draw water from the jars.  What were the servants taking?  Water in the jars remained water. Water changed to wine on the way before it reached the guests. It was real wine, Greek oinos,  not to be a stumbling block to younger Christians, Rom 14 and 15.

V 10) Master of the feast to the Bridegroom . -  Hero’s of the Bible like, Moses, Joseph, David and the prophets, messages of the messiah veiled but now revealed, manifested in glory. Jesus is the best and the greatest.

V11) Beginning of his ministry. Manifesting his glory. See John 1:14

Spiritual Application

·         Out of nothing, water into wine, similar to first miracle, Genesis out of nothing God created the heavens and the earth.

·         First wedding in Genesis, because of sin, there was a fall. Under the wrath of God.  Transformation,  dead sinners made alive. Eph 2

·         The law in the Old Testament made into reality in Jesus, transformation from the Old Testament to the new.

·         Marriage feast points to the final marriage feast between Jesus and the church.  Rev 19:7

·         Best wine for the last He manifested his glory beyond the power of nature.

·         He did this without an instrument, in the Old Testament the prophets had some kind of instrument to do miracles, like Aaron’s rod. Here not even a word was said, he willed it to happen and it was done.

·         Lord manifested his glory without a big celebration of display, did not even use his disciples.

·         Water was transformed on the way to the guests!

·         Christ was revealed to his disciples, they believed on him. The guests were happy as they drank the best wine, but the disciples had a better feast as they saw God in Christ. As he was manifested in glory. It established their faith in him. 

·         There is no limits for our prayers, he is always there for an emergency.

·         Adore him! Believe and believe on him, surrender your life to him alone.
