THE THIRD COMMANDMENT

By Nick Bibile

"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." (Ex 20:7)

Thinking of this commandment the first thing that comes to our mind is the unbeliever who curse the name of God.  The modern church is guilty and accountable to God for not exposing enough light on this commandment.  In the modern church today even the Christians are guilty in breaking this commandment.  This commandment will convict us today and will make our hearts broken in repentance.

The name of the Lord is above every other name.

When we are in the court in front of a Judge we call him by, "your honor". We respect the king, the policeman and the civil authorities of our nation, as we fear them of their authority. What about God, who rules not only a nation but also the entire universe? Moses realized the omnipotent God of the universe and he said to the Israelites;
De 28:58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;
Ps 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is the LORD, art the most high over all the earth.
It is true when we address a King we call him, "your majesty" to a judge we address, "your honor" but to a regular man who is selling bananas we just call him by name.  Why? We address the judge by "your honor" because of his title and not because who he is, if he see the same judge on the road in a grocery store wearing a T-Shirt and denims, and not knowing who he is, we will address him just like an ordinary person. When it comes to honor here on earth it is the title that counts. But God does have more honorable titles than all the peoples of the earth as he is not only the King, he is the Judge, Creator etc., The difference between earthly honor and heavenly honor is, God is not only honored for his title but because of his person, who he is, he is God. He does not have to wear a robe to show his majesty. He is holy by nature, and his name is holy.
Mt 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Our names are earthly names, given by our parents. Our name is sweet only to us, when we hear our name we will look around, as that name is sweet to my ear. But the name of the Lord is not an earthly name. All the other religions they have given names to their gods, and those name are given by men, and those names are earthly. But the name of the Lord is a heavenly name. It is above any other name and it is the most excellent name.

God's name is holy.

If you profane the name of a Judge in the courtroom, you will be punished, how much more if you do that to the Judge of the Universe?
Le 20:3 And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.
1Ch 16:35 And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.
Ps 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
Ps 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant forever: holy and reverend is his name.
Isa 6:3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Blaspheming the name of the LORD.
Blaspheming the name of the Lord, means to blame God, not respecting him, speaking not of reverance, speaking against God or his sacred things, profane language against God almighty.
Le 24:11 And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of the LORD, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:)
Le 24:16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death.
Today God's name is blasphemed over the TV. The TV is the devil's tool to make you worldly. Yes, some of you call yourself Christians but you watch those programs where the Hollywood stars who blaspheme the name of God. The movies and the Hollywood stars are more important to you than God, listen the profane language that comes out of the TV and movies to your living room makes you not a friend of God but a friend of the devil. God's name is Holy and there is punishment in the lake of fire that practices this great evil of blaspheming the name of the Lord.
If you call yourself a Christian, then you are bearing the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are his representative to the world.  But many times your language and behavior are contrary to each other, as it does not match. The Bible mentions about people like this.
Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
When you blame God for something or even get angry with him as things does not work the way you want, and then it becomes blasphemy as you are denouncing his truth, his power, denying his providence and preservation. You say you are a Christian but not live accordingly and because of your lifestyle many are blaspheming God.  "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written." (Ro 2:24) When the heathen saw the Jews, who professed to be God's people, to be scandalous, it made them speak evil of God, and hate the true religion for their sakes.  You are not a light to the unbelievers but a stumbling block to them.

Cursing God.
To utter evil, profane language to God. Generally this happens when a person have a violent temper.
Again we see when bad situations happen unexpectedly many begin to roar, scream then curse God. Job lost all his children, his wealth and added to the emotional pain of losing all what he had, he was tormented by physical pain with boils all over his body. His wife said, "Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God, and die." (Job 2:9)
Seeing and enjoying movies that pleases the flesh, we see how these actors and actresses curse God, as in today's world man does live by TV alone and not by the word of God. This is affected in society and where ever you go, when someone is under tremendous pressure you will hear God's name is cursed.  How many say that they are Christians and under pressure they curse God.  Even Peter who walked with the Lord, when he was under pressure said of Jesus, " Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew." (Mt 26:74)  We need to remember Peter has not received the Holy Spirit at this time.

False Christians.

Hypocrites take the name of the Lord in vain. When they say they are Christians, in reality they are not, it is a lie. They seem to honor God with their lips but in their hearts they do not love him. Their hearts go after their lusts. "And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness." (Eze 33:31 )  Their eyes are lifted up to heaven but their hearts are rooted on earth. They profane and abuse the word of God. They are wicked in their hearts, but from their mouths speak the word of God. It does not seem right when a wicked man speaks of God's sacred word. The most ugliest scene in the Bible is when Satan, who is the devil quoted scripture to Jesus. To hear a wicked man who continually lives in sin and then speak the word of God is like having a gold chain or jewelry on a pig. They have God in their mouths but the devil in their hearts.  According to the law the mouth of the leper is to be covered.

Le 13:45 And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

In the same way a person who calls himself a Christian but speaks of profanity and bad language, his mouth should be covered as he is unfit to speak God's word, he is taking the name of God in vain.

Mocking God.

The Bible say, that a fish swallowed Jonah and he was alive in the fish of a belly and after three days, he came out, who can believe this. Noah made a boat and took all the animals in that boat. God created the world, Jesus rose from the dead. These people read the Bible to mock God. They deny his power and authority, yet they use God's word in vain.  God will punish them in due time.

Using God's Word to Defend Sin.

There are some people who will use scriptures to defend their sins. "Didn't Jesus say to the religious leaders who brought a woman who was caught in the very act of adultery, he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her, and he will not condemn her" But Jesus did not stop there, he continued saying "sin no more".  These people take God's name in vain.

Swearing.

How many say, "I swear by God."  Jesus said, "But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne." (Mt 5:34)

In court as a defendant or as a witness, you confirm by an oath using God's name what you are telling is truth, and then if you are not telling the truth, you have taken the name of God in vain.
Le 19:12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

Using God's name in idle conversation.

How many times you hear the word, "Oh my God!  Oh Jesus! Jesus Christ! God's sake! Or simply God!" To bring God's name in idle conversation when we are not even thinking of him is taking the name of the Lord in vain. His name is holy and needs to be spoken with a holy fear upon our hearts. Not taking lightly and say,  "Thank you God." There are many who are guilty here. His name is above every other name and we need to be careful how we use his awesome holy name in our daily conversation.  Remember what happened to Nadab and Abihu?

Le 10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.
Le 10:2 And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

Nadab and Abihu went to the temple only the high priest can go, did put incense before the Lord and offered a strange fire, it is not the fire that came from heaven, but an earthly fire. They took the commandments of the Lord very lightly, but God killed them on the spot. They thought they were doing the right thing, but they went without instructions, without directions to the holy place, it was a misguided zeal not according to knowledge. Remember these were the sons of the high priest, and also we are the sons of the Living God, and we should not take God lightly as many of us do when it comes to the name of Jesus. How we use the name of Jesus so lightly, he is not the earthly man Jesus anymore. He is seated at the right hand of the Father. It was apostle John who leaned against the breast of Jesus, he is the rest for our weary souls, also the same Jesus is the second person of the Trinity, He will be coming in his power and glory! When John heard his voice in the book of Revelation he fell at his feet as though dead

We are prohibited to use the name of Lord or God, in a light way without showing any reverence and affection to him. The name of God should be mentioned in a very serious manner, with fear of the great majesty in heaven.  But how many are making jokes from the pulpit to make the audience laugh and they come in the name of the Lord.  I do not care how big is your church or how famous is your pastor, if you are attending one of these churches you need to flee as you are fleeing from danger.

Murmuring

When we are going through a hard time there are many who will begin to murmur and say, we should have done this and that and we begin to murmur at his providence. We do not realize that God is in control and everything does not happen the way we want to. What does murmuring do? It is coming against the Judge of earth. Murmuring comes from a bitter root, and it comes with pride and discontent, and takes God name in vain. It is a sin that God cannot bear. God said,  "'how long shall I bear with this evil congregation which murmur against me?' (Numbers 14:27)

Conclusion.

Today we are living in a generation that have no fear for God. Why?  The media, the TV and the movies where most people get fed, are mocking at God.  Majority of the churches are guilty as they have no reverence and fear of the Lord, in their worship, as they worship with so many musical instruments, and people who come to worship the Lord is distracted by the players of the musical instruments and they cannot worship the Lord in spirit and truth, worship has become more like an emotional entertainment to build up the spirit.   The pastor and his message are geared to make the people happy and comfortable, so he gives, he uses the word of God at the same time, and he mingles God's holy word with jokes to makes the people laugh.  What is the outcome? The conducts of the so-called Christians have no effect on the world.

It must become very evident to us, how glorious and awe inspiring God is; and that he is worthy to be feared. Our very conduct must cause others to have an impression on God. Even Abraham said in speaking to God; "And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes."( Ge 18:27) The nearer we approach the Lord the more we humble we become. Peter said, "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." (1Pe 4:11)

We need to be loyal to our God. We do this in honor and fear putting our trust in him as we become loyal to his truth.
