Eternal Torments of Hell

By Nick Bibile

“For I am tormented in this flame.” (Luke 16:24)

Hell is real. The devil is very clever in keeping this subject shut from the pulpits. Also the devil is very clever in making jokes of hell as if it does not exist. However, hell is real. The final authority the word of God speaks on hell, Jesus spoke on hell. Also the false teachers, worldly churches will not teach the never-ending torments of hell. Then if God is love why there is hell? Why would a loving God send people to hell? This is a very uncomfortable subject to many. Hell is eternal.

Mt 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Bible never talks about eternal annihilation but eternal punishment. Hell is not a place of temporal punishment but a place of eternal punishment, never ending punishment.

God is infinitely worthy of love, honor and obedience. God created us and we have an obligation to love him, honor him and obey him.

Mt 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

God is infinitely glorious and not loving him, not honoring him and not obeying him is against an infinite God and an infinite sin. Any sin is an infinite evil against God and it deserves an infinite punishment.

God of the New Testament is also the God of the Old Testament. God will not compromise with sin and wink at sin; he will not clear the guilty. God drowned all the inhabitants of the earth in a world flood except Noah and his family.  Noah found grace in God’s sight. God poured fire and brimstone and killed the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah due to their sins. God did not change his nature when it comes to the New Testament. “For I am the LORD, I change not” (Mal 3:6) Today many are living in sin, enjoying the pleasures of sin, and many are storing sin, accumulating sin daily and any time God’s wrath is going to fall upon them. God will not clear the guilty as God’s righteousness and justice requires punishment.

Exod 34:7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.

If God will not punish the sinners then it is contrary to his nature, God will not compromise his justice. He is an infinitely Holy God who exercises his sovereignty according to his will. God hates sin infinitely and he will execute infinite punishment on sin.

Ezek 22: 21 I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted in the midst of it. 22 As silver is melted in a furnace, so you shall be melted in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord; I have poured out my wrath upon you.

Scriptures speak of different degrees of punishment. People who never knew the word of God, the punishment will be a lesser degree but the people who attended church and knew the word of God, but played games with God, never loved him from the bottom of their hearts, continued in their greed, selfishness and pride. They had all the rituals, had a religion of outward performances but never had an intimate relationship with God; the punishment is going to be severe.

Jesus was at the very present of the people of that day but yet they did not follow him, did not obey him.

Mt 11:24 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the Day of Judgment, than for thee.

Mat 11:21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the Day of Judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Lu 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Those who are preaching false doctrines from the pulpit will be severely punished. Those who are teaching and compromising God’s word by softening down and toning down sin, will be severely punished. Those who are teaching the right thing but living the life of hypocrisy, not setting an example to what they preach will be severely punished.

James 3:1 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Hell is a place where you will weep, wail, and gnash the teeth. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out.” (Luke 13: 28)

It shows the person in hell is alive; they had the knowledge of their sins.

Lu 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

O 'Father Abraham,' saith he, 'have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame.'

Only when judgment comes he is asking for mercy. Many in this world have no desire to ask for God’s mercy as they are living a comfortable life. They have all their needs, sitting comfortably. They are satisfied in their needs, so they don’t have a cry for God, they will not strive to pray, they will not strive to enter through the narrow gate, their bellies are full, the flesh is comforted.

Only when they are in deep trouble they will think of God, then they will go to the Bible seriously, then they will begin to pray seriously but now they are driving pretty comfortably on the broad road and they will not cry out to God.  They are enjoying their pleasures, entertainment, no love to God as they love other things, no honor to love as they honor themselves with pride, no time for God, no fear for God. However, a time will come when suddenly God will pour out his wrath, then they will cry out to God in mercy, But God will laugh at them.

Pr 1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD.

Fear of the Lord is not in them as they lives are focused upon this world. Their goal is not to please God but for happiness and comfort on this earth. They live to please their flesh. Mercy comes only in danger but when you wake up in hell, it is too late.

'Send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'

Notice the agony of the torment in the fire, desiring just one drop of water on the fingertip to cool his tongue.  Today on a hot day like this, many will desire for an ice soda or iced water. However, my friend there are no refrigerators in hell, no fire departments, no hospital, not even a drop of water to cool your tongue, it is all agony in the fire, tormented forever and ever.

Today many are living according to their carnal desires; they want to satisfy the flesh, the flesh rules and not the spirit of God. But in hell the members of the flesh will be tormented forever. Jesus warned by saying

Lu 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

The carnal flesh is comforted now, seeking for pleasure and enjoyment, flesh will be tormented in this flame forever. Many in hell seek earnestly to cool their tongue with a drop of water. Yes, on this earth it’s the tongue that spoke boastfully, the tongue that uttered prideful words, the tongue that compromised sin, the tongue that put other people down, the tongue that slandered, the tongue that was busy in gossiping, the tongue that lied, the tongue that cursed God, the tongue that uttered words of greediness, covetousness, selfishness, the tongue that deceived and tricked other people to profit your life, the tongue that showed no pity for the needy, the tongue that uttered words of anger and wrath. The tongue that cursed, the tongue that uttered filthy jokes, the tongue that hurt others, yes, it is the unholy tongue and we can go on and one with sinfulness of the tongue. In hell, the whole body is tormented but above all, it would be the tongue. The tongue is a master, the tongue is flattering boastful, prideful, sinful tongue.

Ps 12:3 May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

Mt 12:36 But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the Day of Judgment.

When the rich man in heaven cried out to Abraham and said, he is tormented and asking for a drop of water to cool his tongue, Abraham’s answer was, “Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. (Verse 25)

The answer is, “Remember,” there is not a solution but bringing remembrance of good things in earth.  Instead of giving a relief of the pain from agony, fresh recollections of the comfortable, enjoyable, flesh pleasing earthly life was brought to the remembrance. God gave everything, remember it was the Lord that gave you a job, it was the Lord that provided your needs but you did not honor, love or obey the Lord that gave you life. Your focus was not on the Lord but on the earthly worldly life. Remember how much time you spent on your own fleshly happiness but did not have time for the Lord. Remember how God servants preached to you the word but the worldly cares and pleasures choked the word from you. Oh, my friend this is the worst torture as you will remember for eternity, you are tormented, you remember but you cannot repent anymore, oh, what misery is this? This is eternal torment.

When you are in hell it is for eternity but the life on earth was just like a dream, only for a moment.

Job 20:5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

Job 21:13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

You enjoyed the earthly pleasures for a moment; you spent so much time for material things, labored diligently on this earth. You worked hard making your homes beautiful but did not have time for the Lord.  You coveted for material things of this world and you bought them, now when something better comes you throw them away as you covet for more comfort, never content in what you have, coveting for more and more. Thirsting for more and more.

But now you are thirsting for one drop of water as you are tormented in agony of hell. Remember how you focused on earthly things?

Job 20:26 Utter darkness is laid up for his treasures;
a fire not fanned will devour him; what is left in his tent will be consumed.
27 The heavens will reveal his iniquity, and the earth will rise up against him.
28 The possessions of his house will be carried away, dragged off in the day of God's wrath.
29 This is the wicked man's portion from God, the heritage decreed for him by God.

Jesus said of the parable of the rich fool Luke 12:17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’

You thirst for the things of this earth, you had time to do this and do that, your thoughts were to make your business bigger and bigger, your goal was to relax in comfort, eat well, stay healthy and be merry and happy, yes this was your thirst for life.  But in hell, you would be thirsty as you are agonized and tormenting in hell forever. You were given warning after warning but you hardened your heart with pride, now you are humbled in hell forever while the true Christians were humbled for a moment in earth but now they are exalted in heaven forever they live in great comfort.

Remember how you behaved rebelliously against the Lord; remember how carelessly you lived on earth. Remember your home was so comfortable; your refrigerator was in abundance of food. However, you neglected the poor.

Eze 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

Mat 25: 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Remember how you spent your time but you did not have time for the Lord, the Lord was not your first love, remember?

1Co 16:22 If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.

Remember on earth you sinned many times but it was easy for you to forget, there was no conviction of sin, you never cried to God in mercy, now you remember those sins forever. In hell, everything is brought into remembrance. But in the world, you sinned and forgot. You loved your sins of lust and continue to sin.

In hell you will be brought to remembrance, how you loved tradition more than the word of God, how you loved the pope more than the Lord Jesus Christ. How you bowed down to the images of saints and Mary, how you loved your church more than Lord Jesus Christ.

You will be brought to remembrance the wild parties you had on earth, sexual immorality, living together instead of getting married, adultery, murder, passionately involved in homosexuality, having sex with the same gender, how you aborted life by getting rid of the infant.

Remember how you took God’s name in vain, you cursed God, spoke evil against your pastor and your Christian friends, remember how you hated the true Christians, mocked them, persecuted them. Remember, when you were on earth, you were rebuked, corrected and encouraged to read, study mediate the word of God, and remember how you were encouraged in prayer, fellowshipping with God, serving God. Remember how soon you forgot the spiritual things that were told, as you were too busy in your home, work, in the world. Remember God was the last priority to you, you had time for all the other things in the world but did not have time for spiritual things, remember? You were warned repeatedly but you never took it seriously, remember?  When you are in hell, the time is past, you can never ever can repent, it’s agony of torment forever and for eternity you will remember the past warnings and opportunities.

If you are a true believer in Christ Jesus, taking the narrow road, you are born again with the Spirit from above, you have a new heart, new nature, you are living for Christ, looking for Christ, Christ Jesus is your portion and your treasure, you have an intimate love relationship with Christ, you hate sin, you run away from them, and daily you run to the cross. The cunning devil is still fighting with you with unbelief; say good bye to them, once your short time of life here on earth is ended, God himself will wipe away all your tears, there shall be no more death nor sorrow. On earth you experienced suffering for the Lord, you were poor in wealth, you were content in what you had, you sacrificed your comforts for the poor, you ran away from sin, yes, sometimes you fell into deep sin, yet, you could not sleep in the night because of sin, you were deeply convicted of your sin, you cried many times to the Lord to pardon your sins and our blessed Savior pardoned you, now you are comforted in heaven. You lived poor on earth, now you have a mansion prepared by the Lord, you walked the dirty polluted streets of the earth and now you walk the streets of gold. Yes, beloved this is not a vacation for a short time but this is for eternity in heaven.

However, the rich man said, ‘For I am tormented in this flame.’

Hell is place of torment with flame of fire. It is called;

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. (Mr 9:44)

It is called an oven

Mal 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

It is called a furnace of fire. Mt 13:50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

It is called an unquenchable fire. Mt 3:12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

It is called a fire and brimstone, a lake of fire.

Re 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Here we see the anger and wrath of God, full power of the fierceness of God’s wrath and fury upon those who lived in disobedience.

At the Pentecost when Peter preached how they crucified Christ the Lord, many were cut to the heart and they said, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

The Jailor fell down before Paul and asked, “What must I do to be saved?

The answer is godly repentance, truly repent before God of all your sins not holding any of your pet sins, cry on to God for mercy instead of judgment of God’s fierce wrath of fires of hell. Flee from Sin and run to the bosom of our blessed Lord and Savior. He will comfort you.

Remember the rich man wanted a just a drop of water to cool his tongue because of the agony of the fire. Jesus too at the cross, bore the fierce wrath of God and he said, “I thirst” If you truly repented of your sins and turned to Christ instead of your flesh and the world, Christ bore the fierce wrath of God, he was our substitute as he said, “I thirst” Then Christ uttered his last word on the cross saying, “It is finished” Yes, beloved, Christ accomplished salvation for you from the wrath of God that is going to come. Christ did it! Jesus Christ saves! He is the Savior, which came to save sinners from the wrath to come.

The bleeding dying rising Savior is the only hope to the sinner. If you hear his voice and God is speaking to your heart, do not harden your heart, ‘today is the day of salvation.’  If you come to Jesus to the foot of the cross, unloading all your sins, he will dump those sins in the bottom of the ocean.

John 7:37 Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

If you are in Jesus, he quenched the fires of hell instead there is a river of living water flows from the new heart.
