If God is Love, Why is there Hell?

The word hell is even among unbelievers as many say as a joke, “Go to hell.” It has become a common word in our English language when something does not go right they use the word hell. The word hell has become a loose type of a word not having the biblical meaning. We are living in a world today where God of the Bible is presented as a person who winks at every sin as many people say, “God understand my heart.” And still some go further and say, “If God is love, he will not send innocent good people to hell.”

Sounds good? Yes, from a human perspective it sounds good and many believe this is the kind of God they would like to put their trust in. My friend Satan has blinded your minds and you are deceived by the power of the enemy. Jesus spoke more on hell than heaven. Dear friend, hell is not a place where you take a vacation to a remote place and come back, hell is a real place of torment. The person who exposed hell and the torment of hell is the Lord Jesus Christ. The hell what Jesus described and what the world is describing contradicts. I believe my Lord Jesus is telling the truth as he said,

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (Joh 14:6) Jesus is telling the truth as he fulfilled over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament. Jesus is telling the truth as he rose from the dead. Let us see what Jesus said of hell.

Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mt 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

As we see from the above scriptures Jesus was very serious when he spoke of hell, hell is a real place of danger. It’s a place of fire, a fiery furnace of fire that never goes away, it’s an unquenchable fire where the worm does not die, which means it’s a place of extreme pain where the soul will never die, an eternal pain for ever and ever. Jesus again spoke of hell as he said the following.

Mr 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Jesus also said, it is a place of extreme pain of torment. It’s a place where you will be in great pain and anger, raging your anger at God, where the Bible calls gnashing of teeth.

Mt 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Also Jesus said, it is a place of darkness. If there is absolutely thick darkness without any lights we cannot live as it is a place of torment of our soul. God is called light and the unbelievers will be separated from the light of God.

Mt 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Hell is there due to God’s holiness, God is infinitely holy, he is a just God, he will not allow the law breakers to go free. If there is Judge in your city and the Judge tells the city, “I am a loving Judge and I will allow all the law breakers and criminals to go free.”? Even our earthly sinful judges does not want to compromise and they want the law breakers to be punished how much more the infinitely holy God! Because God is infinitely holy he will not wink at justice.

Does man deserve a punishment like hell?

A deserved punishment and a just punishment are the same. Is hell a just punishment? Certainly. Who are punished? The lawbreakers are punished. Who are the lawbreakers? The sinners.

1Jo 3:4 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

We all agree that every lawbreaker is a sinner and they deserve a punishment. But the punishment depends upon the crime. There are bigger crimes and small crimes. There are speeding violations and if you get caught by breaking the law, you will get a ticket and may even have to go to court. But it is not so big as someone murders someone.

Then there are degrees of punishment. There is a difference between a man killing an unknown person on the street and a man killing the president of the U.S. What is the difference? The poor man on the street is unknown, he is poor. But everyone, the whole world knows the president and he is powerful, honorable and have a great authority.

Now let’s take God. God is infinitely great, majestic and glory. He is infinitely honorable and has the highest authority. The angels in heaven worship him day and night, every person born into this world depends on God for life. We are required to obey him.

So my friend to sin against and infinitely holy, majestic God is an infinite crime. There are no small sins and big sins against God. Every sin is a violation against God, against his authority and against obedience to him. We are to obey the laws of the land and how much more we are to obey God. Sin against God is a crime, a violation of infinite obligations and it deserve infinite punishment. If we injure another man, we are taken to the court and people have lawyers to protect them of their crimes. But when you injure God by sinning against him, God is offended as you have violated his laws, who is going to protect you?

1 Sam 2:25 If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?

This is what trembled David, when he was convicted of his sins, he knew he has sinned against the holy, majestic God in heaven as he cried out.

Ps 51:4 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.

This is what made Joseph afraid sinning against God.

Gen 39:9 How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

Any sin against God is an infinite sin as it is a sin against an infinite person. The sin against him is infinite. It is just for God to cast away sinners to eternal punishment as they have sinned against God. Who have sinned against God?

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

From the standard of God none is righteous.

Romans 3:10 “None is righteous, no, not one.”

The tax collector understood this as Jesus gives told the story of the righteous Pharisee and the sinful tax collector.

Luke 18:10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Apostle Paul said in Romans 7:18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

When Adam sinned against God, it affected not only Adam but all humanity, we are all under sin, born of sin.

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—

We are totally corrupt, the will, the affections, the head, the heart the senses, the eyes, the ears, the tasting of the tongue are all corrupt, sold under sin, slaves to sin.

Re 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire

Many have broken the commandments of God, in thought, word and deed, abused the mercies of God instead of honoring God they have trampled God with sin and they deserve the just punishment of hell. God has given you the breath of life, he has given you food for the stomach and given you strength but you have used that energy and strength not to obey God but to sin against God and to rebel against God. And if God sends you to hell it is a just punishment.

Many think that they are holy but what about the profane language you used, many have spent their time in worldly pleasures, unprofitable thoughts, immoral thoughts, pleasing your flesh, gratifying your flesh and lusts. You have no holy time with God, does not care for attending church but you have other priorities in feasting your lusts. How many would spend the Lord’s day with their wicked companions and what kind of conversation would you have with the unbelievers, yes, worldly un-holy and have dishonored the sacred services of God’s house and holy day. What kind of evil things that you have done and practiced secret sins on the Lord’s Holy time.

Jonathan Edwards said, “And how have you behaved yourself in the time of family prayer! And what a trade have many of you made absenting yourselves from the worship of the families you belong to for the sake of vain company! And how you have neglect of secret prayer! Willfully living in a known sin going against the plain commands of the Bible!

Some of you indulged in the spirit of the devil, hating others, wishing evil to them, rejoicing when evil happens to your enemies, envious when others prosper, living in anger like the wild beasts but yet calling yourselves Christians!

Some of you have a such a love for the world and cares of the things of this world and it has taken up your heart, now you have no room for the beloved Lord and not even thinking of the Lord or where you will end up after death. These vanities of this world have neglected reading the Bible, prayer and meditation, have sold your sold to the world as you are drowned with worldly cares and desires day by day getting closer to hell.

Many are engaged in unclean talk, unclean songs and not only corrupted others and you are corrupting them, what abominations done in the dark. Many are living in slothfulness have quenched the Holy Spirit not striving to serve God.

When God converts and saves a sinner there is an amazing unspeakable manifestation of God’s divine love as the poor soul is snatched from going to hell and he is on the way to heaven because of God’s great love. But some of you know this in your head but never expressed your love to God. You have never loved God, you are happy in the world but will not rejoice in God. You don’t mourn over your sins, it does not bother you. You are not willing to deny yourself as you have excused your way out not to carry the cross and to deny yourself but have given prominence to your will.

Some of you are very good actors as you pretend to show godliness and pretend to show your external duties, pretend to behave good, pretend to love God, pretend to honor God but your hearts are far away from God. God cannot be mocked in hypocrisy.

God will bring justice and every heart and motive will be brought open. Confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ and do not continue to walk in sins but mourn and fast of your sins, the Lord will forgive all your sins and forget your sins, he will make you a brand new Christian with full of love for him that you will rejoice in him forever and ever. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Admit you are a sinner, and your soul rests alone on him; and he will never cast you away to hell when you trust in him for your salvation.

The very moment you put your trust in Christ, you will rise from going to hell to heaven. There will be utmost heights of joy unspeakable. When you understand that God had punished Christ instead of you , and I saw that, therefore, you could not be punished any more; and Christ died for you who believe, throw your whole weight into his arms and he will carry you to heaven and you can love him, adore him and worship him for that great salvation for the rest of your life and eternity.
