Do you have a holy fear of Jesus?

By Nick Bibile

Mark 4:35-40 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 8:3-40)

Today we are living in a world as Jesus is presented as a loving Teddy Bear, we see that Jesus is always loving and caring. He can even wink at your sins. I want to show you the true Jesus of  the Bible in a very short summary.

Remember when the Old Testament saints saw the awesome power and the majesty of God, they were terrified with fear. Here in the scriptures we see, Jesus was fast asleep during the storm. The storm happened in the sea of Galillee, which is 682 feet below Mediterranean sea. The Creator of the world in his human nature was tired and was sound asleep. But the storm was extremely powerful, the boat was in bad condition and the disciples thought the storm would destroy their lives and they were just about to die. They had nowhere to ask for help except their Master fast asleep. Matthew and Luke says, they woke up their Master, and rebuked Jesus sleeping during a storm as they said, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing”?  I will paraphrase,  We are going to die, and you are sleeping comfortably, don’t you care?

Jesus got up and rebuked the wind.  Instantly the storm was gone and it was calm. From the terrible powerful storm to sudden instant calmness!  Then it was Jesus turn to rebuke the disciples of their lack of faith. He said, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?

Jesus is the Creator of all, Lord of the wind and the waves, He was still the Master even during the storm. He is the Lord of all, including the Lord of the nature. Yes, they accepted He was the Messiah but they haven’t seen his majesty and the power over nature.

Here they saw his awesome majesty and power even the nature obeyed him. And they were terrified, great fear came upon them. Yes, my friend, the worldly church shows only one side of Jesus, that is Jesus is only love. Unless you see the power and the majesty of Jesus, we don’t realize how deeply we have offended him and fall at his feet.

Remember when Peter could not fish the whole night but Jesus told him to cast the net on the other side, the abundance of fish that amazed Peter and he saw the Majesty and the Power of Jesus and he said, Luke 5:8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord

Peter fell at the feet of Jesus because he was terrified of the majesty and the power of Jesus. Here was a true confession, as he confessed of his sinfulness in the light of the Holiness of Jesus.

So my friend every time the devil throws those temptations, we have nowhere to go but to our Master, trust in Him when we are helpless. As He is awesome and powerful in majesty have deep reverence and fear of God, tremble before his holiness, when you read and study his word, don’t read it like another book, this book is from heaven, read it with fear, reverence and love, read as every word is speaking to you. Pray before you take your spiritual food. Then you will see the difference and you will grow in Christ.
