What is the chief end of man?

By Nick Bibile

What is the chief end of man? 1 Corinthians 10:31 and 1 Peter 4:11

What are we to understand by God’s glory?

God in his very nature is glorious.  He cannot be without it. And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, (Acts 7:2) And his glory is infinite.  I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. (Isaiah 42:8)

We should give glory to God as he created us to glorify him. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; 1 Chro 16:29) for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Cor 6:20)  as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. (Philip 1:20)

Glorifying God consists of four things.

Appreciation, Adoration, Affection and Subjection.

Appreciation

We need to set God in our thoughts as we respect him.  For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. (Psalm 97:9) We glorify God when we are God admirers, as we need to have admiring thoughts of God.

Adoration.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. (Psalm 29:2) This is divine worship, we must worship him in spirit and truth, not any other way.

Affection

Affection has to do with our love to God, we glorify him with our feelings. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deut 6:5) An unbeliever may love God because God because he was promoted to a high position with a high salary, this is to love God’s blessings than to love God.  We should love God with a fervent spirit and with an intense heart.

Subjection

This is obedience, we can glorify God in our life and in our service. Angels obey God in service. The wise men came to Christ did not only bow their knee but brought gifts, we too not only bow our heads in worship but obey him which glorify God.  And David said to Saul, “Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”  (1 Sam 17:32)
