sixteenth century. On the left is the Town Church, where in 1547
John Knox preached his first public sermon. When a captive on a
French galley the next year, he was cheered by the sight of the
church's steeple. Rutherford frequently preached here and presided
over the session, while he was professor of divinity in the city.
The building to the right with arches is the Tolbooth, where David
Calderwood was imprisoned in 1617, after he was called before James
VI and from his knees boldly opposed the King's will and asserted
the responsibility of the General Assembly to maintain the worship
and church government given in Scripture. Calderwood went into
exile, and wrote Altare Damascenum (1623), his masterpiece on
Presbyterian worship and polity. In front of the Tolbooth is the
market cross, where Rutherford's Lex Rex was burned by the
hangman at the Restoration in 1660.
